Prologue
Two lives, evanescent paths
That may never cross again.
One path is that of an enemy
The other, of a friend.
Those badges that the wield with pride
Bring dangerous expectation with them.
This hazardous thing, behind in the dust
Always hindering, always shadowing.
As feelings clash
The gavel comes down
Condemning one who loves.
Inevitably,
Inconceivably,
One path fades into dirt.
When these star-crossed lovers
Meet again, their fate will soon be sealed.
Silent,
Prevalent,
Ever-carved in the story of time.
The lavishly furnished office gave off an unspeaking glamour as the lone prosecutor signed off sheet after sheet of paperwork in the dark.
The pen walks across the paper, leaving a trial behind it wherever it goes.
Miles mused as he signed his name with a flourish. The stack of completed documents was steadily increasing, and he was pleased. Perhaps he would even get home a little earlier than arranged, and attain some well-deserved sleep. He gave a long, exaggerated stretch, and walked to his tea set, taking out a scoop of fine Darjeeling tea leaves.
